Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses acupuncture, herbal medicine and dietary therapy to bring the body, mind, and spirit into homeostasis and to promote optimal health for the individual. Acupuncture can increase the chance of conceiving naturally and is often used in combination with different types of assisted reproductive technologies to help promote conception.
TCM physiology is unique in its inclusion of qi (vital air), blood, body fluids, jing (essence) and Shen (spirit) as parts of its system. There is also an organ system which governs different functions, tissues, sense organs, and emotions and each of these components is necessary for conception to occur. From a TCM perspective, the kidneys, liver, and spleen are the major systems which need to be functioning well for this process to take place. The kidneys provide the jing which is contributed from each parent to the baby. The liver is responsible for storing blood and moving it to the uterus. The function of the spleen is to convert food and liquid into blood and holding the uterus in place. Any of these organ systems can be affected by various imbalances which can manifest as infertility. In the first trimester, a miscarriage can sometimes occur when there is a deficiency of both the kidney & spleen in which the body is not strong enough to support the pregnancy. Proper functioning allows for homeostasis of the internal physiology to take place which helps facilitate a healthy conception.
