SIBO: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

SIBO is a condition in which colonic-type bacteria (resembling bacteria normally found in the colon) proliferate in large numbers in the small intestine.

Symptoms can include:

Abdominal pains - Cramps - Bloating - Gas - Nausea - Vomiting - Diarrhea - Constipation - Heartburn - Acne - Psoriasis - Eczema - Rosacea - Rashes

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, OR have been diagnosed with IBS, you need to know about SIBO.

Causes and risk factors:

Food poisoning (especially during foreign travel) - Exposure to contaminated water - Pathogens - Previous surgery involving the small intestine - Medications including antibiotics and pain relievers - Conditions that reduce gut mobility - Other health conditions such as Celiac Disease.

Associated Conditions:

SIBO has been associated with, but is not limited to, conditions such as:

Malnutrition - Vitamin B12 Deficiency - Liver Disease - Pancreatic Insufficiency - Anemia - Diabetes - Crohn's Disease - Poor absorption of fat - Osteoporosis - Rheumatoid Arthritis - Fibromyalgia - Hypothyroidism - Rosacea - Kidney Stones - Damage to Intestinal Lining

How is SIBO Diagnosed and Treated:

The best method of diagnosis, based on clinical trials, is a fasted Lactulose breath test done over a 3 hour period. The test requires a 1-2 day preparatory diet to remove much of the food that feeds the bacteria, allowing for a clear reaction to the sugar solution (lactulose).

Treatment can include antibiotics, supplements and diet modification.
